Fujii Itsuki. Fujii Itsuki.
That's the name of the lead characters in my all-time favorite movie "LoveLetter." Yes, the girl and the boy had the same name. I don't know much Japanese, I can only assume the name is fairly asexual.
Bulk of the movie's premise is based on the similar names of the two characters. Imagine being a young girl and having the same name as a boy! The endless teasing, confusion and problems in school!
My favorite scene is when the girl finally realizes the boy has been writing not his name, but her name on the library cards.
Back in school, girl FI was annoyed at the boy FI's insistence on filling up blank library cards with his name.
It turned out, the boy FI was writing down her name.
Anyone who has ever had a crush would know what its like. Writing down your crush's name over and over at the back of your notebook in elementary or high school.
Sometimes I think there are too many coincidences. Of course, someone has told me "signs are everywhere if you look hard enough."
Last names are pretty common. I can attest that there are dozens and dozens of pages filled with thousands of people with the same last name in the directory.
But what are the odds of having two people from different countries, different backgrounds, with the same last name-- attend the same class.
Fate? I don't know if I believe in fate. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.
Just wishful thinking.
